Test Liver/Gallbladder Function
ACTION STEPS:
1. According to the Chinese organ clock, the liver and gallbladder function at full capacity between the hours of 11pm and 3am which may disrupt sleep if they are not functioning optimally. Therefore, consider testing the following blood markers in a liver panel:
- ALT/SGPT
- AST/SGOT
- GGTP
- Alkaline Phosphatase
- Bilirubin
- Direct Bilirubin (make sure to include direct bilirubin as it’s often skipped)
- LDH
2. Compare your results once received to the following optimal ranges for each marker:
- ALT/SGPT: 10-30 U/L
- AST/SGOT: 10-30 U/L
- GGT: 10-30 U/L
- Alkaline Phosphatase: 70-90 U/L
- Bilirubin: 0.1 – 1.2 mg/dL
- Direct Bilirubin: < 0.2 mg/dL
- LDH: 140-200 U/L
3. The following patterns can help with the interpretation from a functional lens using the optimal ranges in step 2:
- Possible biliary dysfunction if:
- Elevated ALT, LDH, GGT, Alk Phos
- Possible biliary congestion if:
- Elevated ALT, LDH, GGT, Alk Phos, Bilirubin, Direct Bilirubin
- Possible liver dysfunction if:
- Elevated ALT, AST, LDH, Bilirubin, Direct Bilirubin
Important Note: A vitamin B6 deficiency can mask liver/biliary dysfunction, since these enzymes are mostly dependent on B6. If ALT, AST, and GGT are < 10 U/L, there could be a need for more vitamin B6 (in the P5P form), and the results might not be reflective as a result. A GGT value < 10 U/L may also indicate a need for more glutathione.
4. If you do not have a gallbladder and/or suspect biliary dysfunction or congestion is likely at play, please watch the video above from the Gut Health Masterclass course for liver/gallbladder support. Daily castor oil packs over the liver/gallbladder area may also help promote better motility. Some find relief with coffee enemas to help reduce their toxic burden and support liver and glutathione production.
