Carbs, Sugars & Conversion to Teaspoons
In today’s clip from “Carbs, Sugars & Conversion to Teaspoons”, from ‘Intro to Reading Food Labels’, we break down sugar and carbs in a way that really hits home — because seeing numbers on a label doesn’t always tell the full story.
Here’s the simple way to think about it:
- Fibrous carbs come from veggies — slow to digest, full of fiber.
- Starchy carbs like potatoes or rice can spike your blood sugar.
- Simple carbs — desserts, juices, fruit — give a quick sugar rush.
Labels sometimes show net carbs — that’s just the total carbs minus the fiber, which are the ones that actually affect your blood sugar.
And here’s a really practical tip: convert sugar into teaspoons. One teaspoon = 4 grams of sugar. That means a product with 26g of sugar? That’s 6½ teaspoons — way more than most people add to coffee in a day!
Seeing sugar this way makes it much easier to understand what you’re really eating and how it might affect your energy.
