Basic Mold Facts 🍄
In today’s lesson, “Basic Mold Facts“, from the ‘Intro to Mold & Mycotoxin Illness‘ course, we’re exploring what mold really is, how it grows, and why it can be so harmful to both your environment and your body.
Mold is part of the fungi family and exists everywhere, indoors and outdoors. While most mold thrives in damp areas, some species can grow in dry conditions too. Mold spreads through spores, tiny “seeds” that carry everything mold needs to survive. And just like a busy factory produces fumes, mold releases gases like VOCs and mycotoxins, some of which can be extremely toxic.
Even if you don’t smell it, mold can still be present and growing. It only needs three things:
-
The right temperature, comfortable for humans is comfortable for mold
-
Moisture, even high humidity above 60% is enough
-
Organic material to feed on, drywall, wood, carpet, cardboard, or even dust
💡 The takeaway: Mold is nature’s recycler, but when it invades our homes or buildings, especially those with leaks, floods, or poor waterproofing, it can become a serious health concern. Over 50% of buildings may contain mold or microbial growths, sometimes called sick buildings.
💬 Have you ever noticed mold growth in your home, or had a water-damaged area that wasn’t properly remediated?
